The Day Hobbies became just Hobbies

The day after I exchanged words with the dragon(?) girl, I called upon the forge to make arrowheads in order to replenish my arrows. And there, as always, is the Boss… this is about the same time I usually log in, but …?

“Boss, good evening~.”

After giving my greeting, I tried to enter as usual to make arrowheads, but.

“Earth, have you read the official notice? If you haven’t, you’d better go check it immediately, zo.”

Is the warning that he gave with a voice tense with weariness … Wondering what heck happened, when I looked for the official notice on the homepage, a huge notice was trailing down the site.

Important Announcement: The One More * Free Life * Online Devs

To all players, thank you for always choosing to enjoy One More * Free Life * Online. At this time, we have an extraordinarily important announcement to make, so we ask that you definitely read this notice.

Up until now, we have received a large amount of opinions from all the players that the growth system is not understandable; we have decided to make a portion of the information public and will inform you of them here.

1, There are 4 attributes of directions that Skills can develop your growth; these 4 are weapon abilities, magic abilities, crafting abilities, and reinforcement abilities.

2, In regards to Skill composition, of course it is possible to take all 4 attributes, however if you focus on taking 1 attribute only there is a special growth-limit increase bonus granted. (It is also explained later, but reinforcement abilities are an exception.)

3, Furthermore, if you do not have that bonus, you can’t learn the highest-ranking Arts or acquire the higher-ranking Skills.

4, Furthermore, if you have taken Skills with several attributes, on one hand your flexibility will increase, but you part with the power that you would get from focusing on 1 attribute.
Concretely, the high-ranking Skills you will not be able to progress further are weapons, magic, and crafting; if you’ve taken all of these attributes, compared to the limit of focusing on one, the Skills’ learning limit is around 2 less, and “the strength of the learned Skill abilities” will be largely inferior.

5, For that reason, if you have aspirations towards the appeal of being the strongest in your play-style, take only 1 of any of the attributes of Skills; if you abandon attack power and look for flexibility, then we recommend for you to take several attributes of Skills.

6, However, reinforcement abilities (for example, Physical Reinforcement, Mental Reinforcement, and Thief) are exceptions to this rule. Therefore, players who have decided to focus on only one, whether weapons, magic, or crafting, are able to match it with reinforcement abilities.

7, Furthermore, in regards to weapons, they are things that cannot handle or take two attributes (for example, a player-made, specially-shaped weapon would fall into this category), and there will be Arts that will be unable to be learned (Arts of martial Skills that use both weapons and magic together fall into this category).

With this information being made public, for the growth up until this point, and in consideration of the players who would leave, believing that they will not be able to meet the future growth they desire, from today for a month’s time, we will begin having a special service that allows free Skill erasures and ExP conversion; for further details on the method to do so, please continue reading here.

────────────────────────

This is … they’ve released a huge chunk of hidden information, na; this is going to be tough for a while.

“Did you read it? So, what are you going to do? If I remember, you took weapons, magic, and crafting all together, so it might get tough for you, in the future.”

Is what Boss told me.
After this 1 month passes, unless there’s some compelling reason, it looks like players are mainly going to go towards 1-attribute focuses.

“Boss, since the me now is unmistakably the me I want in this world, I’m gonna continue doing things this way. It’s not like I’m going for the two words “The Strongest” in this game, anyway.”

When I sad this, the gloomy Boss laughed happily.

“Is that how it is; one by one the guys who had second jobs disappeared, and I was on the brink of loneliness, but if an interesting guy like you stays and comes back, then the loneliness will be lifted a little bit!”

So things have already been occurring in places I haven’t seen.
It’s already something that can’t be helped, huh … the desire to be stronger than anyone is quite a natural thing to have; it’s not something that should be pointlessly stopped.

While conversing with Boss, in the mean time I finish making the arrowheads for restocking and leave the forge; next I’m going to the woodworking station to mass produce arrows, but there too the conversation is about the same thing, and there too I have to convey that I will be continuing to come. The movement has been intense beyond expectations after all; it would be good if there are no economic repercussions that come from all the second-job crafters disappearing.

I wonder what Zwei and the others will do; since they move through the guild, it would be fine to find 6 people with different specialties to form a party, and unlike me, they have Fairies, so they would probably be able to correct the structure of the party with the Fairies’ support.
For me without a Fairy, who mainly solos on top of that, if I’m not able to do everything to a certain degree, just wandering around will be way too tough, so in the end, preserving my current status should be the number 1 option.

Anyway, until one week passes, I probably won’t clearly understand the impact. An unchanging me and a changing world; somehow I have the strange feeling that I’m being left behind, but it can’t be helped.
While thinking like that, the day passes by.

  1. …When did he get the title “???”

Also, I’m not sure why the author is doing this… Mono-focused characters are more effective in their roles, but in a virtual slice-of-life like this it actually makes new characters less interesting, doesn’t it? I mean, it’s not like this work actually has to stand up as a game, it’s just a story… :/

But hey! Thanks for the chapter! :D

      1. I know, right. You have a super-special snowflake already, no reason to take your wide and versatile character growth system and limit it to the point where there’s no one seriously playing without a stock-standard, boring, repetitive class system that’s pretending not to be a class system. If you want to do that stuff, just give it a class system. It’ll make the game easier to make, as well.

    1. Maybe author trying to defied from OSO who had kinda similar system and make his own story unique(earth included) but yeah somehow the story lost appeals here

honestly i have a sneaking suspicion he will still gain benefit from this. Either from the devs themselves for being like one of the only few to not change their play style, or from when he has to fight others and due to having a great deal of flexibility is able to surprise his opponents and also able to react to various situations where others would just be not up to the task. That, or people will start mocking him again… and he will still serve them a can of ass-kicking. Though I honestly feel no one will, considering he is so famous and all. Well, only time can tell.

    Thanks for the translation :D

    1. Earth’s specialty has always lied in his ridiculous flexibility between his mix of weaponry and potions. It’s not like he’s going to be less effective just because this was revealed, maybe less effective in comparison to other players but as he said here, he’s a solo player not a party player so he needs to cover as many bases by himself as possible.

  3. Kind of bizarre to explicitly have skills that are a mix of two paths (e.g., his ‘Wind-Blown Hunting Bow’) if you’re trying to encourage specialization.

I’m also not seeing how that adds anything to the story.

    1. It just makes earth more special. Personally, I think it’s something that the devs should have kept a secret … but I guess there will be some economic upheavals and changes to how pick-up parties are formed…
*shrugs* at this point, i’m just in it for future events and AIs

    2. When Earth gets the ‘Wind-Blown Hunting Bow’ in chapter 41, it’s made clear he can no longer get any new Bow arts or Wind spells other than what the ‘Wind-Blown Hunting Bow’ itself grants.

  4. by the way, his new title, liberator is obtained after his fight with andre right?
Specialization is nice, but jack in all trades have its own strength too

  5. Thank you for the chapter!
How did he get the Liberator title? And the ??? title? 😮
Will look forward to another epic tale of Earth’s OPness LOL~ (。•̀ᴗ-)

    1. Given the nature of any ??? title in a GAME, it’s almost certainly something Earth got from being approached by the ‘unreleased’ AI dragon girl.
After all, that’s something that happened recently and if there’s a proper title for meeting her it wouldn’t have been properly included before the game update.
That could result in the system giving out an error-code title because the data shows he’s earned the title but can’t access the file to bestow it.
Or if it’s not that, then it’s the GMs messing with him again. Since there’s no way a ??? title should properly exist.

  6. If I played this game then I would do the same as Earth. I’d rather quit than not being able to do what I want. Earth wanted to play this to do things he wanted so why go do the same as almost everyone if you can cope with it?

Queen shall appear again! (I HOPE)

    Thnx for the chappy~ Nanodesu~

    1. I actually did quit an MMO that limited my options. The original Star Wars online had a system similar to this where you could choose and level up a bunch of skills, it took time but you could build anything you wanted. You ended up with the similar issue where you could not dive as deep into the trees but you could have a wide variety of abilities. They then ripped that out and forced everyone to pick one, semi-prebuilt, class with almost no options. I never updated the game to that patch and never logged in again and a lot of other people did the same.

      1. There are endless possibilites for game systems but the time and effort to make them is a lot and being humans we try and make things easier for us most of the time

  7. They mention becoming a specialist as being beneficial, while withholding the information regarding the benefits of the dual branch skills. Oh well.

  8. The system they described seems to me to be different from how people seem to think it is. The way the system was described it sounds more like you miss out on potential arts and stat bonuses by mixing different attributes in your build (eg weapons and crafting) but you can still be flexible by taking a variety of skills of the same attribute (eg axe and bow) without missing out on arts or stat bonuses. Additionally, while it was left out from the notification, there are skills that can only be obtained by mixing attributes (such as Earth’s wind-element magic bow skill)
This would mean that people can still be full of surprises and cover their weaknesses while still receiving the bonuses. And as an added benefit the crafters will receive a lot more business since combat players are likely going to drop any crafting skills they might have taken to maintain their gear in favor of receiving those extra arts and stat points.

    1. And contrary to that, as Earth feared, there will be another severe shortage of Crafter Players. Because if you have to choose between full combat and full crafter(shopkeep), there’s certainly going to be few people that will choose to abandon combat in a VRMMO.

It’s to the point that I question why anyone would play a VRMMO just to craft, actually. Sounds way boring.

Thank you for the chapter ( ●w●)

Hmm.. only the highest? Then besides the last skill from each advancement there’s no difference? I think i’ll choose multiple attribute..

  10. No, the system is that you want to take 1 main skill attribute and reinforcement ability to maximize your skill advancement/evolution. Taking 2 main skill attribute will limit your skill advancement/evolution -1 level compared to other people that only take 1 main skill attribute. Taking 3 main skill attribute will limit your skill advancement/evolution -2 level compared to other people that only take 1 main skill attribute.

Take note that you need to level up your skill to the level limit before you can advance/evolve it. And more skill level&advancement/evolution=more damage/powerful ability/craft grade limit.

The system is a trade-off between power – flexibility.

In fact, in later chapter, Earth normal attack damage is kinda crap compared to dedicated top line player and Earth craft item(food) grade is capped to lv 8 compared to dedicated craft player that can reach lv 11.

Flexibility player has more easy and faster time to reach level and advancement/evolution limit and then they can unlock upgrade personal attack skill (use exp to upgrade). On other hand, dedicated player still need 1 or 2 main skill attribute advancement/upgrade to reach the limit.

But flexible player still need equalizer outside those 3 main skill attribute and reinforcement ability to match dedicated player if they are both at their max skill level&advancement/evolution limit.

  11. How come the manga is farther away then lught novel? Or its just you can’t get your hands on new chapters fast enough?

    Like

    1. because 1 chapter of manga = 3 to 6 chapters of LN, I picked up the LN after it was abandoned, there’s extra chapters in the LN, and it’s impossible for me to translate that fast.
Please don’t complain too much about the speed. It makes me very sad, because you have no idea how frustrating it is to almost catch up, and then a new chapter of manga is released, putting me 5 chapters behind. Even if I do catch up, it’s only going to be a matter of time before the manga releases surpass me.

  12. You missunderstood me… I don’t complain. I like your speed! Im more hyped to read your translations then waiting ages for manga.
I was just wondering if raw ln is farther away then manga.
Reason: manga after ln or ln after manga?

Plus you have your own original ln-s coming out with the translated ones so the hype is tenfold!
    Keep up the awesome work!😝

    Like

    1. The raw is much further along in LN. It’s just, the LN got picked up for translation a lot later after the manga was being translated, and the first few LN translators dropped it for a while before I picked it up

      Like

  13. Awesome. In that case you will not get bored of translating/greating your own work.

I check 5-6 diffrent weppages daily to read some good LN and yours is the first for me xD

OSO translator has more stuff to do in irl so she/he post new chapters steadly….

The New Gate comes out steadily but “To Deprive a Deprived Person” is on a kinda messed up webpage so I dont know if there is a new chapter or not.

With your page there are no problems and theres nothing confuseing here.

    Thx for the replays!

PS. I was wondering if you would have the time to pick up “TDADP” but that would give you a too big of a workload so I dropped that idea.

    1. I don’t think I can pick up anther one atm, but also, I’m not a huge fan of TDaDP. It was fun to read, but then I just kind of lost interest somewhere…

  14. I would think that raising multiple types is fine. I mean if you’r arond 80% swordsman and 80% firemage then fine you do less dammage on attack, but can’t you just burn up other swodsmen before they can out cut you. Plus when you use combined skills you can probbably out dammage them anyway. Also isn’t thier character level bassed on equiped skills, because if this is right then you could just unequip crafting in place of other skills when fighting to eliminate penalty, or concentrate on a single type to gain its bennifits. Well I’m not sure about the last part but thats how I read thier announcment anyways.
So then thank you for the translation.
